Single Black Women…

Author Corey Barnes recently posed a statement on his Facebook page which inquired about why so many women are single, with African American women leading the way…

“Just looked at some interesting stats online, 40% Asian, 45% White, 51% Latino, and 70% African American women are single in today’s society. So the question today is, why are so many women still single?”

The post garnered over 100 comments and replies. I doubt that the statistics are accurate, however I do agree that there are too many single women.

Single in this context isn’t just as in not married, but this includes not involved in a relationship or merely dating… (many can’t even name the last time they’ve been courted)

After reading Barnes’ post that morning, I pondered over it throughout the day. That evening I responded…click here —> One View of Why Are So Many Black Women Single?

I Love ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA

When I graduated high school I was headed to Clark Atlanta University. Then on my 18th birthday my mom decided that I was going to Talladega College instead. I was pissed, I cried, I cussed (not at her of course… Heck naw), I had a major attitude about the decision.

But TC gave me an awesome Financial Aid package so out the window went CAU. August 1996 I arrived in Talladega, AL. Over the next four years at TC I fell in love.

I had always crushed on AKA, for it had been in my heart from the start. But the AKA’s at Talladega made that crush a life long love affair. These AKA’s weren’t interested in stereotypes, unless the stereotype included being the BEST OF THE BEST! They were the leaders, they were fun, they were cool, they were caring, they partied hard, they served the campus and the community, they weren’t just conceited they were definitely convinced.

Two years after my enrollment, I began to “court” AKA. Our courtship wasn’t an easy one. It was filled with late nights and long days. Like with most courtships, ya gotta put away that ponytail and baseball cap and let your hair down *winks*. The harder it became to court AKA, the more I wanted it. Then one Sunday in November, AKA made my childhood dream come true, it was no longer my secret crush it was a’las my true love!

CHI CHAPTER, Talladega College… Life long friendships, a sisterhood that no fight or disagreement can destroy, best friends, role models, a perpetual bond of sisterhood thats what CHI is to me! Chi, Chi, Chi, Chi, Chi… forever! AKA forever!

I thank GOD for my mother and her decision to send me to Talladega. I love you mommy and Soror Von!! CHI sister’s & all ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA sister’s, HAPPY 103rd Founder’s Day!!

**I forgot to hit publish on 1/15/11, blame my head not my heart. I was in tears once I finished this.**

Happy Founders Day DST

I wouldn’t want to leave any one friend out by trying to name each of you soooo, I decided to extend my wishes this way…

To my Talladega, Texas Southern, Birmingham, Houston, Atlanta, New York & Lakeland friends of DST, Happy 98th Founders Day to you and all of the women of Delta Sigma Theta! See ya in the 100 Club soon… Skeee-Ooop!!!

Kwanzaa

Peace & Blessings!!

My family has celebrated the principles of Kwanzaa for many years.  After many years of celebrating this cultural/community holiday, I’ve realized just how integral of a part the principles play in my life. These seven principles are:

  • Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems, and to solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith): To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

What Makes Celebrating A Birthday Important

Growing up in a family like mine everything is celebrated, especially birthdays. All my life I’ve had a birthday celebration on my birthday and on occasion the party/celebration has lasted for a week! Thus it should be no surprise that at the ripe age of GROWN that I am, I still become excited as July 1st approaches.

The question is usually, “why are you so big on birthdays?” My reply is usually, “aren’t you?” Truth is, I’m excited about my birthday because I recognize that it marks the greatest blessing I’ve had and thats the gift of life!

One of the most spectacular parts of my life is my sister, my friend, my other mom, my soror… MY LISA! Initially, I wasn’t going to share this, but tonight (this am actually) I was moved to share Because She Prayed For A Sister
